Background
Ubiquitin-like molecules (UBLs), such as SUMO1, are structurally related to ubiquitin and can be ligated to target proteins in a similar manner. Unlike ubiquitin, SUMO1 modification does not lead to degradation of modified proteins. SUMO1 modification is implicated in targeting RANGAP1 to the nuclear pore complex and stabilizing I-kappa-B-alpha from degradation. UBLs are synthesized as precursor proteins and require removal of tail sequences by UBL-specific proteases such as SENP6 before conjugation to target proteins. SENPs also display isopeptidase activity.
