Background
This gene encodes a member of the taste receptor type 2 family of class C G-protein coupled receptors. Members of this family have a short extracellular N-terminus, seven transmembrane helices, three extracellular and intracellular loops, and an intracellular C-terminus. They are expressed in a subset of taste receptor cells responsible for bitter taste perception, as well as in non-gustatory tissues such as brain, reproductive organs, respiratory and gastrointestinal systems. This gene is located in the taste receptor gene cluster on chromosome 12p13.
