Target Information
Kinesins are a large family of microtubule-dependent motor proteins responsible for distributing organelles, vesicles, and macromolecular complexes throughout the cell. Members of the heterotrimeric kinesin II family, including KIF3A, B, and C, mediate anterograde transport of membrane-bound organelles in neurons and melanosomes, and are involved in transport between the endoplasmic reticulum and Golgi, as well as within cilia and flagella.
KIF3A may influence neurogenesis and left-right axis determination during embryonic development. Loss of KIF3A function in mouse photoreceptors leads to apoptotic cell death, indicating its essential role in kinesin II-mediated transport and cell fate maintenance.
