Target Information
The Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome family of proteins share similar domain structure and are involved in transduction of signals from receptors on the cell surface to the actin cytoskeleton. These proteins interact with multiple signaling molecules, including the small GTPase Cdc42 and the Arp2/3 cytoskeletal organizing complex.
Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome is a rare, inherited, X-linked recessive disease characterized by immune dysregulation and microthrombocytopenia, caused by mutations in the WAS gene. The WAS gene product is a cytoplasmic protein expressed exclusively in hematopoietic cells, which exhibit signaling and cytoskeletal abnormalities in affected patients. A transcript variant with an alternative promoter and distinct 5′ UTR has been described, though its full-length nature remains unknown.
