Target Information

IL-15 (Interleukin 15) is a cytokine that regulates T and natural killer cell activation and proliferation. IL-15 and IL-2 share many biological activities as both bind common hematopoietin receptor subunits and may compete for the same receptor, negatively regulating each other’s activity.
CD8+ memory cell numbers are controlled by a balance between IL-15 and IL-2. IL-15 induces activation of JAK kinases and phosphorylation of transcription activators STAT3, STAT5, and STAT6.
In mouse studies, IL-15 may increase expression of apoptosis inhibitor Bcl-xL via STAT6 activation, preventing apoptosis. IL-15 plays an important role in growth and differentiation of T and B lymphocytes, NK cells, macrophages, and monocytes, as well as activation of intracellular signaling molecules.
It is essential for immune responses, allograft rejection, and autoimmune disease pathogenesis. IL-15 is a pro-inflammatory cytokine implicated in disorders such as rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis, and pulmonary inflammation. Neutralization of IL-15 has shown beneficial effects in models of psoriasis and diabetes.
