Target Information

This gene encodes a member of a family of candidate taste receptors that are part of the G protein-coupled receptor superfamily, specifically expressed by taste receptor cells of the tongue and palate epithelia. These intronless genes encode a 7-transmembrane receptor protein functioning as a bitter taste receptor. The gene is clustered with three other candidate taste receptor genes on chromosome 7 and is genetically linked to loci influencing bitter perception.
It acts as a gustducin-coupled receptor implicated in the perception of bitter compounds in the oral cavity and gastrointestinal tract, signaling through PLCB2 and the calcium-regulated cation channel TRPM5. Expression is observed in subsets of taste receptor cells in the tongue, palate epithelium, and exclusively in gustducin-positive cells. It is also expressed in the antrum and fundus of the stomach, duodenum, and gastric endocrine cells. Several bitter taste receptors are expressed within a single taste receptor cell.
