Target Information
Adipose tissue serves as an energy reserve in animals and is tightly regulated. Adipocytes secrete various physiologically important proteins such as lipoprotein lipase (LPL), leptin, Acrp30, perilipin, and resistin.
Resistin, also known as Adipocyte Secreted Factor (ADSF) or FIZZ3, is a cytokine secreted by adipocytes. Although its function is not fully understood, resistin appears to play key paracrine roles and is implicated in type 2 diabetes.
- Elevated serum resistin levels are observed in obese, diabetic mice, antagonizing insulin activity.
- Resistin expression requires C/EBP alpha, and coactivators CBP and p300 acetylate histones at the resistin promoter, activating transcription.
- PPAR gamma and RXR ligands have been shown to downregulate resistin expression in adipocytes.
