Target Information
Von Hippel-Lindau syndrome (VHL) is a dominantly inherited familial cancer syndrome associated with various malignant and benign tumors. A germline mutation in the VHL gene causes this syndrome. The encoded protein is part of a complex including elongin B, elongin C, and cullin-2, possessing ubiquitin ligase E3 activity. It mediates ubiquitination and degradation of hypoxia-inducible factor (HIF), a key transcription factor in oxygen-regulated gene expression. RNA polymerase II subunit POLR2G/RPB7 is also reported as a target. Multiple alternatively spliced transcript variants exist.
