Target Information
The paired-class homeobox genes PRX1 and PRX2 are essential for craniofacial and limb development and are expressed in similar patterns in the cranial mesenchyme, limb buds, axial mesoderm, and branchial arches.
However, they differ in heart and brain expression:
- PRX1 is expressed in endocardial cushions, valves, and ventral hypothalamus.
- PRX2 is expressed in myocardial tissue and ventricular septum but not in the brain.
Mice lacking PRX1 show skeletal defects, while PRX2-deficient mice do not. Double mutants (PRX1/PRX2) exhibit novel skeletal abnormalities.
PRX gene expression is induced in vascular disease and co-localizes with Tenascin-C expression sites.
