Target Information
The ABCG5 gene encodes a member of the ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporter superfamily. These proteins transport various molecules across cellular membranes. ABCG5 belongs to the White subfamily and functions as a half-transporter to limit intestinal absorption and promote biliary excretion of sterols. It is expressed in the liver, colon, and intestine. The gene is tandemly arrayed with ABCG8 on chromosome 2. Mutations may lead to sterol accumulation and atherosclerosis, and are associated with sitosterolemia.
