Target Information

Protein tyrosine phosphatases (PTPs) are enzymes that remove phosphate groups from phosphorylated tyrosine residues on proteins. Together with tyrosine kinases, PTPs regulate the phosphorylation state of many signaling molecules such as the MAP kinase family.
Dual specificity phosphatases (DSPs) are a subclass of PTPs, selective for dephosphorylating phosphothreonine and phosphotyrosine residues. The prototypical DSP is the VH1 gene in vaccinia virus, expressed during late-stage infection. The shallow active site pocket in VHR allows hydrolysis of phosphorylated serine, threonine, or tyrosine residues, whereas the deeper pocket of typical PTPs restricts specificity to phosphotyrosine.
