Target Information
Alzheimer’s disease (AD) patients with inherited forms of the disease carry mutations in presenilin proteins (PSEN1 or PSEN2) or the amyloid precursor protein (APP). These mutations lead to increased production of the longer form of amyloid-beta, the main component of amyloid deposits in AD brains. Presenilins are thought to regulate APP processing via gamma-secretase activity and may also play a role in Notch receptor cleavage. Two alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding different isoforms of PSEN2 have been identified.
