Target Information
Alzheimer’s disease (AD) patients with inherited mutations in presenilin proteins (PSEN1 or PSEN2) or amyloid precursor protein (APP) show increased production of the longer form of amyloid-beta, the main component of amyloid deposits found in AD brains.
Presenilins are thought to regulate APP processing via gamma-secretase, an enzyme that cleaves APP, and may also be involved in Notch receptor cleavage. Two alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding different isoforms of PSEN2 have been identified.
