Target Information
Mitochondrial creatine (MtCK) kinase transfers high-energy phosphate from mitochondria to the cytosolic carrier, creatine. It belongs to the creatine kinase isoenzyme family and exists as two isoenzymes: sarcomeric MtCK and ubiquitous MtCK, encoded by separate genes.
MtCK forms dimers and octamers, unlike cytosolic creatine kinase which forms only dimers. Overexpression of ubiquitous MtCK has been observed in malignant cancers with poor prognosis, possibly related to high energy turnover and reduced apoptosis.
Ubiquitous MtCK shares 80% homology with sarcomeric MtCK coding exons. Two genes located near each other on chromosome 15 encode identical mitochondrial creatine kinase proteins.
