Target Information

Steroid receptors are ligand-dependent intracellular proteins that stimulate transcription of specific genes by binding to specific DNA sequences following activation by the appropriate hormone. Prior to activation, steroid receptors associate with various proteins in both stable and transient fashions. These include heat shock proteins (HSP70, HSP90), immunophilins (FKBP52, FKBP54, CyP-40), and other proteins such as p23, p60, and p48.
p23, along with HSP70, HSP90, and p60, forms part of a transient intermediate complex with the progesterone receptor (PR). The cloned human p23 protein consists of 160 amino acids, highly conserved among species, and functions as an acidic phosphoprotein with multiple phosphorylation sites. It interacts with HSP90 and is essential for the binding of HSP90 and CyP-40 to PR, suggesting a critical role in PR function.
