Target Information
The paired-class homeobox genes PRX1 and PRX2 are essential for craniofacial and limb development. They are expressed in cranial mesenchyme, limb buds, axial mesoderm, and branchial arches.
- PRX1: Expressed in endocardial cushions, semilunar and atrioventricular valves, and brain (ventral hypothalamus, telencephalon).
- PRX2: Initially expressed diffusely in myocardium, later in ventricular septum; not expressed in brain.
- PRX1-deficient mice show skeletal defects; PRX2-deficient mice do not. Double mutants (PRX1/PRX2) exhibit unique skeletal abnormalities.
- PRX gene expression is induced by vascular disease and co-localizes with Tenascin-C expression.
