Target Information
The protein encoded by this gene belongs to the highly conserved cyclin family, characterized by periodic changes in protein abundance during the cell cycle. Cyclins regulate CDK kinases, and distinct cyclins display specific expression and degradation patterns that coordinate mitotic events. Cyclin D3 forms a complex with CDK4 or CDK6, acting as a regulatory subunit required for the G1/S transition. It interacts with and phosphorylates tumor suppressor protein Rb. CDK4 activity associated with Cyclin D3 is necessary for progression through G2 phase into mitosis after UV radiation. Several transcript variants encoding different isoforms exist. Diseases associated with CCND3 include Retinoblastoma and Plasma Cell Leukemia.
