Target Information

Superoxide dismutase (SOD) is an antioxidant enzyme that protects against reactive oxygen species (ROS).
SOD catalyzes the conversion of superoxide radicals (O₂⁻) into hydrogen peroxide, which is further converted into water and oxygen by glutathione peroxidase and catalase.

There are several SOD classes:

• SOD1 (Cu,Zn-SOD): Cytoplasmic enzyme found in all eukaryotes, homodimeric 32 kDa structure.
• SOD2 (Mn-SOD): Mitochondrial enzyme, tetrameric 80 kDa structure located in the mitochondrial matrix.
• SOD3 (EC-SOD): Extracellular enzyme expressed in lungs, vessel walls, and airways.
• SOD4 (CCS): Copper chaperone delivering Cu to SOD1 for activation.
