Target Information
Nerve Growth Factor (NGF) influences the survival and differentiation of various neuronal and non-neuronal cells. NGF acts through high and low affinity cell surface receptors, with only the high affinity receptor mediating signal transduction. Studies show NGF forms complexes with specific receptors in rat PC12 cells. Human and rat NGF receptor genes share over 90% homology. NGF plays a key role in stimulating growth and differentiation of sympathetic and sensory neurons. Mutations in the NGF gene are linked to hereditary sensory and autonomic neuropathy type 5 (HSAN5), and dysregulation of NGF expression is associated with allergic rhinitis.
