Target Information
The glycerol kinase gene belongs to the FGGY kinase family and encodes the enzyme responsible for catalyzing the phosphorylation of glycerol by ATP to produce ADP and glycerol-3-phosphate.
This enzyme plays a key role in glycerol uptake and metabolism.
Defects in this gene cause Glycerol Kinase Deficiency (GKD).
Alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been identified.
