Target Information

CD44 is a 100 kDa type I transmembrane glycoprotein widely expressed on human leukocytes, brain white matter, and certain epithelial cells of the intestine and breast. Multiple isoforms exist, with CD44H being predominant in normal tissues.
It functions as a receptor for hyaluronic acid (HA) and plays roles in cell-cell interaction, adhesion, and migration. CD44 is involved in lymphocyte activation, recirculation, and homing. Its expression can be upregulated in carcinomas, potentially linked to metastatic potential.
CD44 is expressed in hematopoietic and non-hematopoietic cells, epithelial tissues, and filopodia of cultured keratinocytes. Bone marrow myeloid cells and memory T cells express high levels, while peripheral B and T cells can upregulate CD44 upon stimulation.
Alternative splicing of CD44 transcripts results in diverse isoforms, contributing to structural and functional variability.
Diseases associated with CD44 dysfunction include superficial keratitis and lichen sclerosus, and CD44 may also be implicated in tumor metastasis formation.
