Target Information

BIM (BCL2L11) belongs to the BCL-2 protein family, which includes regulators of apoptosis that form hetero- or homodimers and act as pro- or anti-apoptotic factors.
The protein contains a Bcl-2 homology domain 3 (BH3) and interacts with BCL2, BCL2L1/BCL-X(L), and MCL1 to promote apoptosis.
Its expression can be induced by nerve growth factor (NGF) and the transcription factor FKHR-L1, suggesting a role in neuronal and lymphocyte apoptosis.
Mouse transgenic studies indicate that this gene functions as an essential initiator of apoptosis in thymocyte-negative selection.
Several alternatively spliced transcript variants have been identified.
