Target Information
PER2 (Period circadian protein homolog 2) is a mainly nuclear protein involved in circadian rhythm regulation. It belongs to the basic helix-loop-helix family of transcription factors and contains PAC and PAS domains. PER2 is part of the circadian core oscillator complex, including CRY, CLOCK/NPAS2, BMAL1/2, CSNK1D/E, TIMELESS, and other PER proteins. It plays a critical role in generating circadian rhythms and acts as a negative regulator in the transcriptional feedback loop. PER2 is strongly expressed in skeletal muscle and pancreas, with lower expression in the lung. Mutations in PER2 are associated with familial advanced sleep-phase syndrome (FASPS).
