Target Information

Calpains, including Calpain 1 (CAPN1), are calcium-activated neutral proteases that function as nonlysosomal, intracellular cysteine proteases. Mammalian calpains include ubiquitous, stomach-specific, and muscle-specific proteins. The ubiquitous enzymes are heterodimers composed of distinct large catalytic subunits and a common small regulatory subunit. The CAPN1 gene encodes the large subunit of calpain 1, and several transcript variants encoding two different isoforms have been identified. Diseases associated with CAPN1 include Spastic Paraplegia 76, Autosomal Recessive, and Spasticity.
