This gene belongs to the cytidine deaminase gene family and is one of seven related genes or pseudogenes located in a cluster on chromosome 22, likely formed through gene duplication. Members of this cluster encode proteins structurally and functionally related to the C-to-U RNA-editing cytidine deaminase APOBEC1. These proteins may act as RNA editing enzymes and play roles in growth or cell cycle control. Alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been identified.
