Target Information
Epidermal Growth Factor (EGF) binds to the EGF Receptor (EGFR), a 170 kDa protein kinase, initiating diverse cellular signaling pathways. EGFR forms homo- or heterodimers with other family members, each activating distinct signaling cascades such as RAS-RAF-MEK-ERK, PI3K-AKT, PLCγ-PKC, and STAT pathways. EGF is widely expressed in kidney, cerebrum, prostate, and salivary glands, functioning as a potent mitogenic factor. It also plays roles in NF-κB signaling activation. Defects in the EGF gene are linked to hypomagnesemia type 4 and its dysregulation has been associated with cancer progression.
