Target Information
The protein encoded by this gene is a member of the bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) family, part of the transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-β) superfamily. This family includes growth and differentiation factors. BMPs were first identified by their ability to induce endochondral osteogenesis in vivo at extraskeletal sites. BMP4 plays a key role in the onset of endochondral bone formation in humans, and reduced expression is associated with bone diseases such as Fibrodysplasia Ossificans Progressiva. Alternative splicing in the 5' untranslated region has been described, with three variants encoding an identical protein.
