Target Information
The androgen receptor (AR) is a member of the steroid-hormone receptor superfamily of nuclear receptors.
It is a ligand-activated transcription factor that binds active testosterone (T) and dihydrotestosterone (DHT).
Upon ligand binding, the receptor translocates into the nucleus, dimerizes, and stimulates transcription of androgen-responsive genes.
AR signaling is crucial for development and function of male reproductive organs such as prostate and epididymis, and also affects muscle, hair follicles, and brain.
Abnormalities in AR signaling are associated with diseases including prostate cancer, Kennedy’s disease, and male infertility.
Mutations in the AR gene can cause complete androgen insensitivity (CAIS).
