Aldolase는 class I fructose-bisphosphate aldolase 단백질 패밀리에 속하는 효소를 암호화합니다. 해당 효소는 fructose-1,6-bisphosphate를 glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate와 dihydroxyacetone phosphate로 가역적으로 전환하는 반응을 촉매합니다.
세 가지 isozyme(A, B, C)은 서로 다른 유전자에 의해 암호화되며 발달 단계에 따라 다르게 발현됩니다. 이 유전자의 변이는 용혈성 빈혈을 동반하는 당원축적병 XII형(Glycogen Storage Disease XII)과 관련이 있으며, 다양한 암의 진행에도 관여하는 것으로 알려져 있습니다. 또한 관련된 pseudogene이 염색체 3번과 10번에서 확인되었습니다.
