Target Information
Beta-2-microglobulin (B2M) is a 12–14 kDa protein that forms part of the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class I. It is associated with HLA Class I antigens and expressed on various cell types including lymphocytes, thymocytes, monocytes, granulocytes, platelets, endothelial, and epithelial cells, but absent on erythrocytes.
It is also found freely in plasma. The amino acid sequence of B2M is homologous to immunoglobulin constant regions, forming a predominantly beta-pleated sheet structure. The protein is involved in antigen processing and presentation, TCR signaling, and CD8+ cell signaling.
B2M is encoded by the B2M gene on chromosome 15. Mutations can lead to hypercatabolic hypoproteinemia. Measurement of B2M levels assists in assessing renal function in kidney transplant recipients and serves as a prognostic marker for HIV infection.
