Target Information
Bone Morphogenic Proteins (BMPs) are members of the TGF-beta superfamily that influence bone and cartilage formation. Mature BMPs are 30–38 kDa proteins with a TGF-beta-like cysteine knot configuration. Lovostatin increases bone formation by activating the bmp-2 gene. BMPs stimulate production of specific bone matrix proteins and affect stromal cell and osteoclast proliferation. They also play roles in the development of viscera, including cell proliferation, apoptosis, differentiation, and morphogenesis. BMPs are involved in normal dorsal/ventral patterning and signal through type II and type I receptors, activating the Smad protein pathway.
