Target Information
Ubiquitin is a highly conserved protein (~8.5 kDa) involved in ATP-dependent targeting of proteins for proteolytic degradation. Proteins destined for degradation are covalently attached to the C terminus of ubiquitin, forming a ubiquitinated complex recognized by degradative enzyme systems.
Ubiquitin also binds to pathological inclusions resistant to normal degradation. Therefore, ubiquitin antibodies are valuable for studying these inclusions, such as:
- Neurofibrillary tangles and paired helical filaments (Alzheimer’s disease)
- Lewy bodies (Parkinson’s disease)
- Pick bodies (Pick’s disease)
