Target Information
Myeloperoxidase (MPO) is a hemoprotein abundantly expressed in neutrophils and secreted during their activation. Native MPO is a covalently bound tetrameric complex of two glycosylated alpha chains (59–64 kDa) and two unglycosylated beta chains (~14 kDa), with a total molecular weight of ~150 kDa and theoretical pI of 9.2.
MPO is a main target of anti-neutrophil cytoplasm antibodies (ANCA), markers for systemic vasculitides such as periarteritis nodosa, microscopic polyarteritis, and Churg-Strauss syndrome. Low to moderate anti-MPO autoantibody levels are also reported in rheumatoid arthritis. MPO participates in cardiovascular disease initiation and progression, possessing proinflammatory properties that may contribute to tissue injury. It is under consideration as a promising cardiac marker and plays a key role in host defense by catalyzing production of hypohalous acids, primarily hypochlorous acid, enhancing microbicidal activity.
