Target Information
The protein encoded by this gene regulates pancreatic beta-cell function and is highly similar to mouse JIP-1, a regulator of c-Jun N-terminal kinase (MAPK8).
It prevents MAPK8-mediated activation of transcription factors and reduces IL-1β and MEKK1-induced apoptosis in pancreatic beta cells.
Additionally, it acts as a DNA-binding transactivator of the glucose transporter GLUT2.
REST (RE1-silencing transcription factor) represses its expression in insulin-secreting beta cells.
Mutations in this gene have been associated with type 2 diabetes susceptibility.
