Target Information
Apoptosis Inducing Factor (AIF) is involved in chromatin condensation and DNA fragmentation during apoptosis. AIF localizes in mitochondria and translocates to the nucleus upon induction of apoptosis, promoting the release of cytochrome c and caspase-9. It induces chromatin condensation and large-scale DNA fragmentation, key features of apoptosis. AIF is highly conserved between human and mouse and is widely expressed. Mutations in the AIF gene cause combined oxidative phosphorylation deficiency 6, leading to severe mitochondrial encephalomyopathy. Alternative splicing generates multiple transcript variants, and a pseudogene is identified on chromosome 10.
