POU5F1 (Oct-4)는 초기 발생 단계에서 처음으로 기술된 모계 발현 옥타머 결합 단백질입니다. 배아 발생에서의 역할로 인해 줄기세포 생성 및 퇴행성 질환 치료를 위한 세포 대체 요법 연구에 유용할 수 있습니다.
POU5F1, Sox2, Klf4, Lin28 및 c-Myc를 발현시켜 인공 줄기세포(iPS cells)를 생성할 수 있으며, 최근에는 바이러스 도입 없이 플라스미드를 사용하여 iPS 세포를 생성하는 방법이 개발되어 재생의학 적용 시 안전성이 향상되었습니다.
