IL-23는 IL-12의 p40 서브유닛과 p19 단백질이 이황화 결합된 이형이량체 사이토카인입니다. p19는 단독으로는 생물학적 활성이 없으며, IL-23은 IL-12Rβ1 및 새로운 수용체 서브유닛 IL-23R과 상호작용합니다.
활성화된 mouse 및 human 수지상세포에 의해 분비되며, IL-12와는 다른 생물학적 특성을 가집니다. Mouse IL-23은 IFN-γ를 유도하지 않지만, 기억 T 세포의 증식을 강하게 유도하고 IL-17 생산을 촉진합니다.

IL-23은 IL-12Rβ1 및 IL-23R과 결합하며, 활성화된 수지상세포에서 분비됩니다. Mouse IL-23은 기억 T 세포의 증식을 유도하고 IL-17 생성에 관여하지만, IFN-γ 유도는 거의 없습니다.
Human IL-23은 IL-12와 비교해 기억 T 세포 증식과 IFN-γ 생성이 중간 수준으로 유도됩니다.
