배경 (Background)

This gene encodes a member of the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) family of receptor tyrosine kinases. This membrane-bound protein has a neuregulin binding domain but not an active kinase domain. It can bind the ligand but does not convey the signal into the cell through phosphorylation. However, it forms heterodimers with other EGF receptor family members with kinase activity, leading to activation of pathways for cell proliferation or differentiation. Amplification or overexpression of this gene has been reported in various cancers, including prostate, bladder, and breast tumors. Alternate splice variants encode different isoforms, one of which is secreted and modulates cell signaling.
