Background
This gene encodes a member of the epidermal growth factor (EGF) receptor family of receptor tyrosine kinases. This protein lacks a ligand-binding domain of its own but forms heterodimers with other ligand-bound EGF receptor family members, enhancing downstream signaling pathways such as MAPK and PI3K. Amplification or overexpression of this gene is associated with various cancers, including breast and ovarian tumors. Alternative splicing results in several transcript variants.
