Background
Eukaryotic translation initiation factor 4E binding protein 1 (EIF4EBP1) encodes a translation repressor protein that directly interacts with eIF4E, a limiting component of the complex recruiting 40S ribosomal subunits to the 5′ end of mRNAs. This interaction inhibits complex assembly and represses translation. The protein is phosphorylated in response to signals such as UV irradiation and insulin, leading to its dissociation from eIF4E and activation of mRNA translation.
