Background
This gene encodes the D1 subtype of the dopamine receptor, the most abundant dopamine receptor in the central nervous system. It is a G-protein coupled receptor that stimulates adenylyl cyclase and activates cyclic AMP-dependent protein kinases. D1 receptors regulate neuronal growth and development, mediate behavioral responses, and modulate D2 receptor-mediated events. Two transcript variants exist due to alternate transcription initiation sites.
