Target Information
This gene encodes class I alcohol dehydrogenase, gamma subunit, a member of the alcohol dehydrogenase family. These enzymes metabolize ethanol, retinol, aliphatic alcohols, hydroxysteroids, and lipid peroxidation products.
Class I alcohol dehydrogenase forms homo- and heterodimers (alpha, beta, gamma subunits) with high ethanol oxidation activity, playing a major role in ethanol catabolism.
The three genes encoding alpha, beta, and gamma subunits are tandemly organized in a genomic cluster.
