Target Information
IL12B (IL-12 p40) encodes a subunit of interleukin 12, a cytokine that acts on T and natural killer cells with broad biological activities. Interleukin 12 is a disulfide-linked heterodimer composed of a 40 kDa subunit (encoded by IL12B) and a 35 kDa subunit (encoded by IL12A).
This cytokine is expressed by activated macrophages and is essential for Th1 cell development and maintenance of memory/effector Th1 cells, contributing to long-term protection against intracellular pathogens.
Overexpression has been observed in the CNS of multiple sclerosis (MS) patients, suggesting its role in disease pathogenesis. Promoter polymorphisms have also been associated with asthma severity in children.
