Calcium Channel gamma-3는 전압 의존성 칼슘 채널(VDCCs)의 구성원으로, 뉴런이 특정 세포 영역에서 칼슘 신호를 조절할 수 있도록 합니다. N-Type VDCCs는 출생 전부터 존재하며, 출생 후 시냅스 전달 형성에 중요한 역할을 합니다.
또한 Calcium Channel gamma-3는 AMPA 수용체 조절 단백질(TARP)로서, AMPA 수용체의 수송 및 채널 개폐 조절에 관여합니다.
이 단백질은 PMP-22/EMP/MP20 계열의 8개 멤버로 구성된 기능적으로 다양한 단백질 하위군에 속하며, CACNG3 유전자의 기능 이상은 소아 결신 간질(childhood absence epilepsy)과 관련이 있습니다.
