Target Information
IL-10 encodes a cytokine primarily produced by monocytes and to a lesser extent by lymphocytes. It plays a key role in immunoregulation and inflammation by:
- Down-regulating Th1 cytokines, MHC class II antigens, and costimulatory molecules on macrophages
- Enhancing B cell survival, proliferation, and antibody production
- Blocking NF-kappa B activity
- Regulating the JAK-STAT signaling pathway
Mouse knockout studies indicate IL-10 is essential for intestinal immune regulation. Mutations in IL10 are linked to increased susceptibility to HIV-1 infection and rheumatoid arthritis.
Associated diseases include Graft-Versus-Host Disease and Human Immunodeficiency Virus Type 1.
