Target Information
LFG (Lifeguard), a seven-transmembrane spanning protein, is a member of a family that inhibits apoptotic cell death induced by the Fas receptor. It is the human homolog of rat NMP35 and contains a conserved transmembrane domain with a small cytoplasmic domain.
LFG protects cells from Fas-mediated neuronal cell death without reducing Fas expression or interfering with FADD binding. However, it does not protect against TNF-alpha–mediated cell death.
Although ubiquitously expressed, Northern blot analysis shows higher expression in hippocampus and neural tissues, suggesting a protective role in neurodegenerative diseases.
