Target Information

Chromosome 9 consists of about 145 million bases and 4% of the human genome and encodes nearly 900 genes. It plays a role in gender determination; deletion of the distal portion of 9p can lead to male-to-female sex reversal in individuals with an X,Y genotype.
Hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia, associated with harmful vascular defects, involves the chromosome 9 gene encoding the endoglin protein (ENG). Familial dysautonomia is linked to chromosome 9 via the gene IKBKAP.
Chromosome 9 also contains the largest interferon family gene cluster and is involved in the translocation with chromosome 22 that produces the BCR-ABL fusion protein commonly found in leukemias.
Two isoforms of C9orf93 are produced through alternative splicing events.
