Target Information
IKBKE is an activator of nuclear factor-kappa-B (NF-κB). Overexpression of IKBKE has been observed in breast cancer cells, and suppression of IKBKE induces cell death.
NF-κB is a ubiquitous transcription factor and an essential mediator of gene expression during immune and inflammatory responses. It mediates the expression of numerous genes in response to extracellular stimuli and is associated with IκB proteins in the cytoplasm, which inhibit NF-κB activity.
IκB is phosphorylated by the IκB kinase (IKK) complex containing IKK-α, IKK-β, and IKK-γ. A novel molecule in the IKK complex, designated IKK-iota/IKK-i, has been identified. IKK epsilon is required for the activation of NF-κB by PMA and T cell receptors but not by TNF-α and IL-1. IKK-iota/IKK-i expression is inducible by TNF-α, IL-1, and LPS in various tissues.
