Target Information

MaxiK channels are large conductance, voltage and calcium-sensitive potassium channels that play a key role in regulating smooth muscle tone and neuronal excitability. These channels consist of two subunits:

  • Alpha subunit: pore-forming
  • Beta subunit: modulatory

The protein encoded by KCNMB4 is an auxiliary beta subunit that slows activation kinetics, increases calcium sensitivity, and shifts the voltage range of current activation to more negative potentials compared to the beta 1 subunit.
