Product Specific Information

Mouse anti-Dehydroepiandrosterone antibody, clone DHEA(-3):1-19.1 detects dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), a steroid prohormone which is the precursor of all sex steroids.

Target Information

Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) is a natural steroid hormone produced from cholesterol by the adrenal glands. It is also synthesized in the gonads, adipose tissue, and brain. DHEA serves as a precursor to androstenedione, testosterone, estradiol, estrone, and estrogen, making it the most abundant hormone in the human body.
Most DHEA is sulfated (dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate, DHEAS) before secretion. This conversion is catalyzed by sulfotransferase (SULT2A1) primarily in the adrenals, liver, and small intestines. In blood, DHEAS levels are approximately 300 times higher than free DHEA. Measurement of DHEAS/DHEA levels is useful for detecting excess adrenal activity, such as in adrenal cancer or hyperplasia, and certain forms of congenital adrenal hyperplasia. Women with polycystic ovary syndrome typically show normal or mildly elevated DHEAS levels.
